The Johnny Otis Show – The Johnny Otis Show Live At Monterey

Whatever you have to do to get The Johnny Otis Show at Monterey, just do it. This is a fascinating set recorded at that city’s jazz festival in 1970.

The whole album captures the rollicking, spontaneous nuance of Otis’ stage show. There is son Shuggie-who soon after recorded the classic space cosmic blues Inspiration Information which you should package in the same order as this album-Big Joe Turner, Esther Phillips, Roy Milton, and a cast of class A blues men and blues women.

Different musicians, as far as i can tell, come on stage during different parts of the show–a trombone in one part, a new singer, a vibraphone adding jazz elegance where you least expect–and add a party atmosphere to the tight playing core band here.

The blues is great, but there is an intimacy to this album that is rare and that really bolts it into the classic ranks. You really get the feeling you are being introduced to Otis’ friends at a party that has many guests, but only special people are invited to. It really feels like you are there, and you will forget this is FORTY TWO YEARS AGO, THAT is how immediate this is, and how much we feel that immediacy.

Incidentally, if some tracks here sound vaguely familiar, it may be because Clint Eastwood used some footage of this performance in Play Misty For Me (1971) . I knew there was something I liked about Clint’s movies.
