Steely Dan – Sun Mountain

This set of old demo tracks might surprise Steely Dan fans who are used to the mirror-polished studio albums by which most of us define them. And they might not be to many peoples’ tastes. But there is great value in them for their simplicity and glimpse into the seeds of what would become one of the most impressive catalogues of music from one of the most impressive rock acts of the era (fight me lol).
It’s the musical equivalent of one of Da Vinci’s sketchbooks full of line drawings and figure studies. The songs aren’t fully fleshed out into the masterpieces many would eventually become, but you can already hear the brilliance in the songwriting, vocal delivery, and oh man that piano…
