Madonna – The First Album

So this here was Madonna’s first full-length album, striking out on her own as a solo artist. I am familiar with the background story: originally hailing from Detroit, Madonna hopped on a bus at the tender age of 19 and got into the New York club scene. There she met a small-time producer, John ‘Jellybean’ Benitez… and though their personal relationship didn’t last, Benitez was important in terms of getting this unknown talent her first big break.
Anyway – my younger sister and I (we’re not so young anymore) both absolutely loved this album. We would stay up listening to it, blasting it in my sister’s ‘boom box’ as we sang and danced around the room like a couple of drunken maidens. We were high, all right – but it had nothing to do with drugs or artificial means. We just got into the groove; we were experimenting with makeup and hairspray, we were looking at boys differently, and we were shopping for bras for the first time. Our bodies were changing, and we were enjoying the process.
A couple of years later, Sister and I got a little older, and we started breaking off from each other (which is normal). This record (which was a cassette back then) stuck around our bedroom, but we stopped listening to it together. So sometimes, when she went out with her boyfriend (who is now my brother-in-law), I would borrow it for a while but I always put it back again where I found it.
In any case – as things go somehow the tape disappeared, and to this day neither of us knows what happened to it. Sister still thinks I took it (stole it), but I know that I didn’t – we still don’t know where it went. We got over the issue (sisters often learn to forgive each other), but to this day we still wonder where it went. Now that I have it again, it brings back those memories of the two of us coming of age… singing and dancing along to an artist who truly cut out her own kingdom in the world of ’80s pop music.

Some copies were issued with an A4 flyer for the “Virgin Tour” video release.

“Burning Up” is presented in its remixed version for this album (4:48) instead of being the video version (3:41) that was available on the second edition of MADONNA in October 1983.

Later issued in France with a different price code (France: WE 381) added by a sticker on back cover.
