Astrud Gilberto / Walter Wanderley – A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness

49,99

I recall that this LP was released back in 1966 when Brazilian organist Walter Wanderly had the top 40 instrumental organ hit, Summer Samba, which was a pleasant tune. I do not know whether his hit preceded this recording session, but coupling Astrud Gilberto with Mr. Wanderly during the bossa nova era made potential financial sense. Ms. Gilberto’s singing is just fine, as was usual for her back in the 1960s. Her delivery was delicate, pretty and often touching. Nevertheless, to be objective and not a negativist, I’ve always found the organ to be overpowering on this LP. It is harsh sounding and does not mesh well with the inherent prettiness of her voice.

Some of the highlights of this otherwise enjoyable release are “Tu Mi Delerio,” which has a nice “one key at a time” extended piano solo. “It’s A Lovely Day Today” is effective sunshine pop. “A Certain Sadness” is very poignant and the vulnerability of the singer’s voice elevates the song to five stars – it’s beautiful and sad and she really captured the feeling intended by the songwriter. I recommend most of what Astrud Gilberto recorded in the 1960s, including this release, despite the need for some musical surgery here.
