The London Festival Orchestra Conducted By Stanley Black – Grand Canyon Suite (Reel to Reel)

39,99

The Grand Canyon Suite is one of the most popular 20th Century American orchestral works. It consists of 5 movements: Sunrise, Painted Desert, On the Trail, Sunset and Cloudburst. As a you man, Ferdinand Grofe wandered about the American Southwest in the early 1920’s, playing the piano in hotel bands, vaudeville houses and dance halls. He fell under the spell of the Grand Canyon and vowed to someday translate his vivid impressions into music. He began work on the Suite in 1922, but it mostly lay dormant until 1931 when Paul Whiteman, his mentor and friend, asked him to complete it for a winter concert in Chicago. The entire work premiered on November 22, 1931, by Whiteman’s ensemble of twenty-odd musicians. The Suite was a roaring success, and two years later, Grofe was appointed conductor of the Capitol Theater Orchestra on Broadway, where he was finally able to draw upon the full resources of a modern symphony orchestra.
