Black Sabbath – Born Again

Let me begin by saying that I really love this album and if you are reading this review then you probably have heard it or maybe not. First, Born Again is like no other Black Sabbath album before or since. Not only does Ian Gillen’s unique and awesome vocals make it very different, but as you may or may not have heard all the rhetoric about this album having a beyond horrible mix and the engineers were stoned and the master tapes were cursed by Satan or whatnot. The sound of these recordings is precisely what gives this album its touch you could say. The recordings, I do admit, sound quite muddy and that seems to be the main issue and complaint about “Born Again”. Let me start with the lead vocals, Ian is fantastic and as you may expect and gives every song a unique feel, awesome performance hands down. Second, the guitar. This is where I feel the sound gets muddy and has a strange vibe I can’t explain really, however, it sounds HEAVY as HELL and it is one of the many things that make this album sound so unique. And the guitar solos are quite noisy and saturated but again, still sounds awesome. Third, the bass. I am a bass player myself and I’m aware that the bass sounds really heavy on this album and honestly it is not a flaw at all because it’s the backbone of this recording. This album had to sound like that. And last but not least, the drums. Bill Ward did a fantastic job as expected, I really like the sound of his kit, the cymbals sound fresh and clear and the snare sounds very natural, not overly produced. Overall, this album is dark, evil, sinister, and every vile and evil thing you can imagine, but I have been listening to it since 1983, and still sounds as fresh as the first time. My advice, listen to it with an open mind, remember, it’s not “Paranoid”, and it’s not “Heaven and Hell”, it’s a different beast, darker and even more evil, it’s great.
