The Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet was one of the pioneers of modern music. During his career he conducted an impressive number of premieres, including many works by Igor Stravinsky, with whom he had a close friendship. Sergei Djagilew appointed him conductor of the famous Ballets Russes dance company in 1915. He created outstanding recordings for the Decca label with L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, which he founded. This recording of the suites from Bizets Carmen and L’Arlesienne was created in London in 1958.
