This is (so far) the darkest, most psychedelically experimental BH album, and I have been in love with it since it was released. I don’t think any longtime BH fan will be disappointed.
they’ve abandoned drum machines for a real drummer now I believe, and it makes a difference. songs like “Dive” build up to a heaviness I never expected, nor did I want it to end, is one of the prime examples of this band exploring new paths. the guitar-free “Black Car” is a haunting song you’ll be hard-pressed to get out of your head. “Woo” and “Lemon Glow” share the synth-drenched psychedelia that suits BH very well. the album opener “Dark Spring” I feel is the most ‘typical’ sounding shoegaze-y, dream pop, BH song off the whole album. without delving into each specific song, I’ll just say there isn’t a dud in the bunch. also, we get to hear Victoria sing in (her native tongue) French for the first time.
I love how comfortable Beach House sounds on this album. while this is their 7th album (hence the title), it feels both familiar and new. they’re venturing into new places, sounds; both beautiful and strange, taking us listeners to a new level.
I highly recommend this album, (especially listening with headphones) for diehard and casual fans. each journey Alex and Victoria take us listeners on is special, and I hope they never stop.
